Life Stories Program

Trained volunteers help to capture our residents’ meaningful memories as part of the new Life Stories program.  Through a unique, national initiative called “Americorps in Eldercare Settings” (or ACES), baby-boomer aged professionals are working directly with seniors as helpful story hunters; capturing and recording life histories to be shared and treasured among friends and family.

Central Connecticut Senior Health Services was selected through a competitive process to receive a grant and to be an ACES host site.  ACES volunteers bring their own special skills and talents to the Life Stories project as well as their compassion for our seniors and respect for their well-led lives.  They learn through listening—and get even more than they are give.  “Everyone’s life is meaningful," said Bill Stachelek, a former teacher and headmaster and current ACES Life Stories volunteer. "To pass their important achievements on in the form of a legacy is an honor.”

“My whole life has been one of service, and I didn’t want that to end when I retired,” said Donna Storms, ACES volunteer. “I am a good listener so I bring that skill to Life Stories, but who knew that being a retired baby-boomer would work to my advantage one day?”

“The Life Stories experience is a ‘win-win’ for the volunteers and the residents," said volunteer Lynn Patrick. "Everyone comes away from this project with a sense of pride and empowerment!”

For seniors who are interested in recording their life story, or baby boomers who would like to learn more about how to become an ACES volunteer working on Central Connecticut Senior Health Services Life Stories program, please call 860-276-1020.

If you are a resident of one of Central Connecticut Senior Health Services communities, utilize any of our out-patient services or are a senior living independently within our community, we invite you to tell your story!
